Baby Tumbler

My elongated tumbler quilt (Softly Tumbling, published in my book, Tumbler Quilts) has gone to its new home.. but I miss it SO much! I don’t make many quiet quilts, and I think that is what I missed. I likened it to when your child goes off to university.. a happy yet sad event!

So I decided to use my smaller template (5″ x 2.5″ approximately) to make a baby-sized version. I needed to buy a few more fabrics, as I wanted it to be slightly brighter.. here are the blocks I ended up with.

Now it looks like a simple quilt to piece, but look how much it shrinks horizontally when I start piecing it together. Because of this it is really hard to keep the pairs together. After making 40 or so tumbler quilts (YIKES) I have found this ridiculously simple solution. Label the rows with numbers. I wrote them on blue painters tape. And yes, you need to do 2 rows to keep it all straight. Hopefully this will make this part of making the quilt go more quickly. No more undoing seams and re-sewing. (Apologies to those who want me to clean up all those loose threads.)

And here it is, all done!

I did some simple quilting, following the lines of the blocks, 1/4 ” in from the sides

Of course they are totally different sizes.. one is bed-sized, the other baby-sized (basically 1/4 the size.. so much faster to make!)
