I admire lone star quilts, but have never been inspired to make one- too organized and symmetrical for me! Then I saw this quilt somewhere on the internet universe. It was made in the mid-1970s by Annie Bell Pettiway (1930-2003). Annie was part of the Gee’s Bend Collective, and her whole family made quilts to survive the cold winters.
I love her use of colour and patterned fabrics, as well as the organization and the randomness. This quilt measures 77 x 77 inches.

A few days ago I went to a one-day retreat with the Etobicoke Quilters’ Guild, and decided to make a few blocks to see If this was something I wanted to explore a bit more. I made two versions- one with mostly solids, and one with bright patterned fabrics. I especially like the first two blocks, below. I definitely will be exploring this block more!

Here is the version I made with bright, patterned fabric. I decided that I wanted to concentrate on the other blocks, so mounted this to fabric. Next I will stitch it down, quilt and hang it. Maybe a cushion cover?
